Sprint AiRave - Easy to install - just doesn't work.
Last night I received the new AiRave unit from Sprint. If you read my earlier post on Which wireless carrier? Stick with Big Red OR go Yellow , you remember that this was a critical element in the decision....because of that STUPID ELECTRICAL BOX.....but I digress. This post is about the AiRave installation.
Why GPS
Generally, the installation was easy cheesy. You have to put the unit near a window because it uses GPS to verify where it is. Sprint doesn't want you taking the unit all over the place getting cheap calls....it's for your house...and your house it needs to stay. So when you set it up, it captures the GPS coordinates, so Sprint knows when you're moving the unit around.
Anywho....I have to have the unit in our bedroom, because that's where the internet Router is. The little GPS unit comes with a nice long cord so I was able to stretch it to our bedroom window and keep the unit on the other side of the bedroom....to offer better coverage to the other side of the house....the side the driveway is on...reference electrical unit.....so.....I plugged everything in all the lights came on. Seemed to be working fine....but no GPS and no System.
Why No GPS
We only have one window and it faces sort of North East. If you know anything about GPS in the US, most of the satellites are in the Southern sky. Needless to say, it's tough getting a GPS signal near our bedroom window. I tried with my cellphone and couldn't....but it could downstairs....which is weird.............I'll move the unit tonight and see if it works.
Well...without the GPS, the unit won't work....so....as of now.....it's all going back and we're going to have to stay with Verizon.
Tonight...I will move the unit and see if it works.
On a side note.....hving to stay with Verizon isn't all that bad...they have that new Droid phone coming out that looks totally AWESOME!!!!! more on that in another post.
